August 2023 and the UFO exchange

What a great meeting!

  • Nearly all of our members came to the August UFO exchange and ice cream social.  And a previous member has returned.  Welcome back, Patti.
  • The ice cream treats and fruit bars were delicious.  Thank you, Lydia!
  • Each of us got 10 free tickets to "spend" on the offerings. These photos are at the end of this post, starting here.
  • Jean R. told us what to bring for September's meeting.  More info is below.
  • Show & Tell, both completed quilts and our Blocks of the Month.
  • Information on the holiday party.  Updated information from Hope is below.
  • Jean R has found a volunteer who will take our quilts to Mary's Place and we passed around a thank-you card for her.

 Completed Quilts

Justine brought 3 quilts to share.  Two are t-shirt quilts for a friend's sons.

Marlene made this donation quilt from the kits we were given.

And she made a second from her stash.

She also made this quilt by the familiar sew-cut-sew method.  It, too, will be donated.

Patti has returned to us and brought a quilt to show.

Jean R made this one.

Ruth made this one.

Jean S made both of these for donation.

September preparation & program

BRING TO THE MEETING:

     4 half-square triangles, 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" using fabrics suitable for a teenager
You can bring more than 4 if you like.
    your sewing machine

An easy way to make 4 HSTs of this size is to start with 10" squares.

  1. Cut 2 10" squares from coordinating teen-appropriate fabrics.
  2. Place them right sides together and sew around the perimeter,  1/4" from the edges.

  3. Cut the square on both diagonals.

  4. Open each piece and CAREFULLY press the seam allowance to the darker side.  These are bias edges -- they will stretch out of square with rough handling.
  5. Trim to 6 1/2" square.
Bring at least four  6 1/2" squares to the September meeting.

AT THE MEETING:

We will combine our HSTs and arrange them in a pleasing design.  We will sew them into twin size top(s) at the meeting and Jean R will finish them at home.  She will donate the quilt(s) to Youth Cares.

December holiday party

  • Please sit at tables in groups of 4.
  • Bring one or more decorations for your table and combine it with other's at your table.
  • Prizes will be awarded for the best table decoration, as voted by all of us.

  •  This year's voluntary gift exchange is mug rugs.  Make a single, or a set, of any design of your choosing.
